Pictured above after winning his fourth English title in the National Junior Championships earlier in the year, this weekend Huthwaite Boxing Club’s Marcus Ellis will be taking the first steps on his way to adding a fifth National title to his record.
The 16-year old amateur boxer heads to Leicester on Saturday 19 October to take part in the first stages of the competition which he hopes will see him doing exactly what he said when talking to Jack Fletcher back in May : “I just want to keep on winning”.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of the whole team at the club,” he said. “In the end, it’s down to me to get in the ring and get the wins but their continued support, both in training and in my corner, are what push me to perform at my best.
“Camp for this one has gone really well. I’ve never trained so hard for a competition before and I’ve been working every day in the gym, getting better each day.
“To win a fifth national title would be great – it’s all adding to my achievements for when I want to turn pro. I’ve never been this confident before and I’m ready to go so bring it on!”
Ranked Number 1 in England at 70kg, with 29 victories from his 36 bouts so far, Marcus also spends a lot of time training at the Phoenix Boxing Gym in Nottingham and with Michael White at the Fighting Fit Gym in his home town of Worksop, and has his sights firmly set on turning professional by the time he reaches 20.
Scott Calow commented: “Marcus has trained with us here at Huthwaite Boxing Gym since the age of 12 and there’s no doubt in my mind that his dedication and determination will continue to pay off.
“He has a great future ahead of him and the whole team will be behind him on his journey, both as an amateur and when the opportunity to make that move into pro boxing comes.
“His achievements are an inspiration to the other young amateurs at the club. Along with his coaches and fans, they’ll all be rooting for him on Saturday and looking forward to seeing him progress through the competition to secure yet another title.”
