Huthwaite Boxing Club‘s latest Evening of Amateur Boxing, held at the Grosvenor Rooms in Sutton-on-Ashfield on Friday 1 November, once again lived up to all expectations with 15 bouts on paper and 15 bouts on the night…
“The atmosphere was terrific, all the hard work paid off and it was great to see such fantastic support for the boxers taking part,” said head coach Jordan Turner. “A huge thank you to everyone who made it possible – our own boxers, the travelling boxers and their clubs, the officials and all those who worked behind the scenes to ensure its success.”
Among the seven Huthwaite youngsters on the bill were 10-year old Tyson Price, Joel Price (11) and Riley Weaver (13).
In his second skills bout for the club, Tyson showed a very good level of skill and selection of punches. “He’s a tough lad, nothing fazes him and I don’t think it will be long before he goes into full competitive bouts” commented Jordan.
“As for Joel, in his third skills bout for us he showed just how much he’s improving day by day. It was obvious how much he’s come on – he does his own work at home and it’s a real pleasure to coach and corner him.
“Dropping down to a skills bout this time around, Riley showed great technical skill and went up through the gears in every round. This was the best I’ve ever seen him box in the ring; now he’ll build on this and will be looking to have his hand raised when he’s back out in three weeks’ time.”
Representing the club on the show in competitive bouts were Connor Kitchener, Ashton Simpson, Charlie Chappell and Matthew Sludds.
First up was 12-year old Connor who, after a slow opening round, upped his work in the second and third, landing some cracking shots and forcing a standing 8 count before going on to win by a unanimous decision.
Next came Ashton, aged 14, with a very close first round which could have gone either way, followed by a second round in which he found a good rhythm, landing some good shots and moving his opponent back. After a close final round which left both boxers exhausted, the decision went to his opponent on a split decision.
Another defeat by split decision followed, this one for 21-year old Charlie. “This was a three-round war from the first bell right through to the last, a real fight in anyone’s terms,” said Jordan. “All credit to Charlie’s opponent and his club for taking the bout at just two days’ notice – hopefully these two boxers will have the chance one day to get it on again.”
Completing the line-up for Huthwaite was 16-year old Matthew, winning his bout with an incredible performance. “I’ve never seen Matt box the way he did in this one, coming out with real grit and determination,” added Jordan.
“From getting stopped in the first round of his first bout for us to having the guts to get back in there, with all the pressure of boxing in front of his home crowd – what an achievement, for that alone he fully deserved to receive the Mick Riley and Brian Yemm Award for Best Huthwaite Boxer!”
